The use of certified reference materials (CRMs) is an
important tool to ensure reliable measurement results, which are key elements
for effective consumer protection. In this study, we report the development of
a corn flour CRM (CRM; KRISS CRM 108-01-011) for the analysis of type B trichothecenes,
one of the largest groups of Fusarium mycotoxins. After screening type B trichothecenes in several cereal
products, a corn flour product was used as a bulk raw material for the CRM
production. The material was freeze-dried, ground, sieved, and well-mixed. The processed
bulk material was packaged in 14 g portion per unit and stored at –70 °C. The
CRM was certified by using an isotope dilution-liquid chromatography-tandem
mass spectrometric (ID-LC-MS/MS) method. Ten units were randomly selected and
analyzed to simultaneously characterize and assess the homogeneity of the
target analytes in the CRM. The CRM showed excellent homogeneity with less than
1 % of among-bottle relative standard deviations for all mycotoxins. The
certified values for the CRM were (1432 ± 39) µg/kg for deoxynivalenol, (95.1 ±
2.7) µg/kg for nivalenol, (9.84 ± 0.23) µg/kg for 3-acetyldeoxinivalenol (277 ±
17) µg/kg for 15-acetyldeoxinivalenol. The value for deoxynivalenol-3-glucoside,
(214.0 ± 3.8) µg/kg, was provided as an informative one due to the lack of its
traceability to the SI units. Measurement uncertainties of the certified values
varied between 1.8% and 6.2%, confirming their higher-order metrological
quality to provide references for testing laboratories. The stability of the
CRM was also assessed and confirmed at different designated temperatures and
scheduled test periods.
