With the outbreak of COVID19, quarantine is considered a very
important issue worldwide. Among the various quarantine substances, commonly
used chemical species is benzalkonium chloride (BKC) which is quaternary
ammonium compound. Accordingly, there is a need to conduct a risk assessment of
quaternary ammonium compound, a widely used quarantine substance. Inhalation toxicity
of BKC has thus been extensively studied worldwide. In the hazard assessment of
BKCs, the measurements of the BKC in air after quarantine is important. For this
purpose, we have developed a 3D printed passive sampler for BKC. BKC was
sprayed using a small ultrasonic injection device in a 125 L chamber, and two
passive air samplers were suspended in the air to collect BKC sprayed in the
air to analyze the collected amount. It was found that a passive sampmer filled
with XAD2 resin can adsorb a relatively small amount of BKCs. As an extension, in
near future, the same experiment will be conducted in a large chamber of 5000
L, and intervention research will be conducted with the quarantine company
recruited.
