Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulations (SLIM)-based ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) enables extended flight paths for high-resolution separation. This study optimizes the ion transmission and evaluates the trajectory control of a SLIM Trap board. The SLIM Trap improves IMS resolution by repeatedly circulating ions, providing a dedicated region for continuous laser irradiation to investigate excited states and photoreactions of gas-phase ions. Ion trajectory control using traveling waves (TW) and DC voltage
switching was demonstrated. Adjusting switch trigger timings with a delay
generator achieved reliable gating and directional routing toward either the
TOF mass spectrometer or the looping pathway. This confirms the capability to
manipulate and trap ions within a rectangular loop. Ion transmission was confirmed up to the TOF mass spectrometer
entrance. Although no electron multiplier (EM) signal was observed, results
indicate the limitation is associated with the detector, not ion transmission
through the SLIM-IMS system.
