Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been widely used in industrial and consumer products because of their unique physicochemical properties, including high chemical and thermal stability and resistance to water and oil. However, their extreme environmental persistence can result in long-term accumulation in the environment and potential human exposure. In response to these concerns, regulatory restrictions on the manufacture, use, and presence of PFAS in products have been introduced worldwide. Under the EU Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation, concentration limits as low as 0.025 mg/kg (25 μg/kg) have been established for selected PFAS, including PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS.¹⁾ The European standard EN 17681 specifies analytical methods for determining PFAS in textiles. EN 17681-1 describes an LC–MS/MS-based method for ionic PFAS, whereas EN 17681-2 provides a GC–MS/MS-based method for neutral volatile and semi-volatile PFAS.²⁾˒³⁾ In this study, the practical applicability of LC–MS/MS and GC–MS/MS was evaluated for the complementary screening of ionic and neutral PFAS in textile samples based on EN 17681-1 and EN 17681-2, respectively. |
