The increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to industrialization and the resulting global warming have led to more frequent natural disasters worldwide. In response to these challenges, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) launched the Global Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Watch (GGGW) in May 2023 to bolster scientific support for mitigation actions under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement. As part of
these global efforts, Korea has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by
2050. The Korean Ministry of Environment has initiated an urban GHG monitoring
network, with plans to expand it over the next three years to estimate top-down
GHG emissions and verify bottom-up GHG emission inventories. To meet the growing demands of global and local stakeholders, the Gas Metrology Group at KRISS is focused on developing commutable reference gases, known as KRISS scales, that meet the requirements of the WMO Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) for consistent measurement of atmospheric GHG levels. This effort includes establishing KRISS GHG scales and aligning them with the WMO scale. To ensure commutability, the matrix and GHG isotopic composition of the reference gas mixtures must closely match those of atmospheric air. To achieve this, methods for measuring isotopic ratios in the atmosphere and developing GHG air scrubbing systems are being established. |
