Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which are associated with various adverse health effects, have pervaded environmental media such as air, soil, and water, posing significant risks to both environmental and human health. Recent investigations have identified PFASs in numerous consumer products. This study aimed to assess the distribution of PFASs by analyzing 55 items from 13 categories of consumer products. Using LC-MS/MS, 31 different PFAS compounds were quantified, while IMS-HRMS was employed for suspect screening to identify potential precursors. The quantitative analysis revealed a broad spectrum of PFAS concentrations, ranging from non-detectable levels to 13,779 ng/g. PFBA, PFHxA, and PFHpA were detected in all samples (100% detection rate), with short-chain PFASs being more prevalent than long-chain variants. Suspect screening identified several fluorinated precursors, including 10:2 FTUCA, 8:2 FTUCA, 10:2 FTAcr, and 8:8 PFPi, known for their role in the formation of PFCAs, as well as N-MeFOSAA, a precursor of PFSAs. Correlation analysis revealed significant associations between certain PFCAs and their precursors, such as a positive correlation between 6:2 monoPAP and PFHxA, 8:2 diPAP and PFNA, 6:2 diPAP with PFPeA and PFHpA, 8:2 monoPAP with PFHpA and PFOA, and 8:2 FTS with PFBA, PFOA, PFNA, PFHpA, PFHxA, and PFPeA. Our findings provide the first comprehensive assessment of the distribution of PFASs and their precursors in consumer products in South Korea.
