Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used in manufactured products due to their unique chemical properties. However, they have become emerging environmental concerns because of their bioaccumulation, toxicity, and persistence. Industrial complexes are significant sources of PFAS, releasing a wide variety of these substances, including legacy, alternative, and precursor PFASs, into the environment. This research investigated the occurrence of PFAS in surface water from two industrial complexes, Namdong and Shihwa complex in Korea using LC-MS/MS and LC-QTOF/MS. Solid phase extraction (SPE) using weak anion exchange (WAX) cartridges was employed to extract PFAS from the collected surface water samples. A total of 37 target PFAS were identified by LC-MS/MS. The total concentrations of the 37 target PFAS were 228.65 ng/L for the ND region and 594.91 ng/L for the SH region. PFBS, PFHxA, and PFPeA were the dominant PFAS species in the ND region, whereas PFOA, PFPeA, and 6:2 FTS were the main PFAS species in the SH region. Suspect and non-targeted analysis by LC-QTOF/MS was also conducted for qualitative analysis of PFAS. From this analysis, 12 PFAS species were identified and annotated with a confidence level (CL) of 3 or higher. Our results indicate that industrial complexes are major sources of PFAS nearby water environment. |
