Neonicotinoids are insecticides that selectively target nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the insect central nervous system (CNS), causing prolonged receptor activation and neurotoxic symptoms. These insecticides can also impact vertebrates through dermal absorption following a spray event. The Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has regulated the residual values of these pesticides in poultry meat to 0.02 mg/kg for imidacloprid and 0.01 mg/kg for both clothianidin and thiamethoxam, ensuring that pesticide management is actively enforced in Korea as well. To ensure accurate and reliable measurements of these neonicotinoids in chicken meat, an analytical method for their determination was established using the isotope dilution liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC/MS/MS) technique as a candidate reference method. Isotope analogues, 13C6-imidacloprid , clothianidin-d3 , and 13C4, 15N-thiamethoxam, were used as internal standards. The clean-up process was performed using tC18 solid-phase extraction (tC18 SPE) cartridges, eliminating matrix interferences and facilitating trace quantification. For the validation of the developed method, fortified mass fractions into chicken were compared with the measured mass fractions. The ratios for fortified and measured mass fractions were less than 5 %. |
