Monitoring the migration of substances from food contact materials (FCMs) is essential for food safety. A non-targeted analysis using liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) was conducted on 300 food utensils, containers and packaging in Korea, resulting in a library of FCMs. Based on high detection frequency in non-targeted analysis and oral/dermal toxicity, two compounds, erucamide and xanthone, were selected for development of quantitative analytical methods. Target compounds were confirmed by comparing retention times and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) data between standard solutions and migrated samples using LC-Orbitrap. Quantitative analytical methods were developed using LC-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-TQ) with electrospray ionization (ESI) in positive ion mode. The methods were validated for linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), accuracy, precision, and reproducibility. Intra-day (three replicates per day) and inter-day (three days) experiments were conducted for accuracy, precision, and reproducibility. These analytical methods enable the quantification of newly identified hazardous substances in FCMs and may support regulatory standard development.
Key words: Food contact materials, non-intentionally added substances, migration, liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry
