To
enable the on-site detection of predicted contaminants using a tube furnace and
residual gas analyzer (RGA), we developed a portable mass spectrometer
optimized for field deployment. This system combines a rectangular ion trap
(RIT) configuration with discontinuous atmospheric pressure interface (DAPI)
technology, enabling stable vacuum operation with a low-power pump and ensuring
portability. The instrument's performance was evaluated for both qualitative
and quantitative applications. The RIT successfully analyzed five different
mixtures with varying mass (m/z) values. Using caffeine, robust linearity was
demonstrated across the entire analytical range (R2 = 0.9) for
quantitative analysis. For field applications, paper spray ionization (PSI) was
incorporated as a ambient method. After depositing a 10 μL aliquot of a 1 mM
caffeine solution onto filter paper, 4.5 kV was applied, enabling qualitative
detection of caffeine without sample preparation. Mixtures with four different
m/z values were also qualitatively analyzed. Future research will focus on
combining spray ionization with thin-layer chromatography (TLC) to enhance
selective detection of trace analytes against a complex background matrix.
Consequently, the developed miniature TLC-MS platform is expected to provide a
powerful solution for rapid on-site analysis in chemical emergency situations. |
